Virginia Cooperative Extension's Henrico County office confirms the mechanism directly: the plant can spread by stem pieces cut and distributed during mowing, and recommends bagging clippings in affected areas rather than mulching or discharging them across the rest of the lawn.

Myth: Hand-Pulling Clears It Out for Good

Root and stem fragments left behind after pulling can resprout just as easily as fragments spread by mowing, which is why hand removal alone tends to leave a smaller version of the same problem rather than solving it.

What Actually Helps

If buttonweed has already spread through part of a lawn, mowing that section last and bagging the clippings before moving to the rest of the yard limits how far it travels in the meantime. Herbicide timing matters too: treatment in spring, right as the plant emerges from dormancy, works better than waiting until midsummer, when older growth becomes more tolerant of selective herbicides. It often takes two full springs of treatment to get an established patch under control.
