Keeping Fertilizer Out of the Sound: What Coastal Lawns Should Do Differently

A lot of lawns in our Hampstead service area sit close to tidal creeks, sounds, and the Intracoastal Waterway, and what lands on a driveway or street does not stay put. NC State Cooperative Extension's lawn guidance is built around that fact: water that moves into storm drains goes directly into streams, carrying fertilizer with it.
Why Coastal Lots Have Less Room for Error
Communities like Surf City and Sneads Ferry sit right next to the water, and the same guidance notes that excess nutrients damage North Carolina's waters. A lawn that gets only what it needs protects both the grass and the creek next door.
Habits That Keep Fertilizer on the Grass
The NC State list is short. Test your soil first so you apply only what is needed. Fill and empty spreaders on the lawn, not on the driveway. Sweep or blow any fertilizer that lands on pavement back onto the grass right away. And do not apply fertilizer to frozen ground or dormant turf.
Let the Clippings Work
Leaving clippings on the lawn returns nutrients, and NC State says recycling them can cut the nitrogen you add by about a third. On a coastal lot, that is a built-in way to apply less without the grass noticing.
Timing Matters as Much as Amount
Fertilizer applied just before a heavy rain is the most likely to wash off, and the coast sees plenty of heavy rain, especially in late summer and fall. Checking the forecast before spreading, and skipping the application when a storm is a day or two out, keeps more of it in the soil. Warm-season grass that has gone dormant for winter should not be fed at all.
A Program Built Around Your Lot
A fertilization program that starts from a soil test and applies only what the grass needs is better for the lawn and for the water behind it. If your lot backs onto a creek or sound, it is worth raising when you set up a program.
